Bereits 1981 gegründet, zählen ANIHILATED zu den ersten Thrash Metal Bands Grobbritanniens. Darüberhinaus waren sie nicht unerheblicher Teil in der Schaffensphase des Crossovers und beeinflußten die Entwicklung der britischen British Thrash Metal Szene nachhaltig.ANIHILATED entsprangen ihren frühen Punk-Wurzeln genau zu jener zeit, als METALLICA und SLAYER aus der brandneuen Thrash Welle in Amerika hervorbrachen. Nach Beiträgen auf verschiedenen, erfolgreichen LP-Samplern, wurden sie instinktiv schneller und gingen stilistisch mehr Richtung Metal. Frühe Auftritte mit ihrem neuen Material verwirrte das Publikum, welches hauptsächlich aus Punks bestand, da die meisten Leute niemals zuvor eine Thrash-Band gesehen oder gehört hatten und der Gedanke kam auf, dass sie sich nun ausverkaufen. Dennoch – die Erkenntnis, dass ANIHILATED nicht ihr ethisches oder ihre gesellschaftliche Verantwortung aufgaben, hielt ihre Glaubwürdigkeit in der Punk-Gemeinschaft aufrecht und sie behielten deren volle Unterstützung während sie ihren härteren Thrash weiterentwickelten.
Im Frühjahr 1984 hatten sie endlich das Geld zusammengekratzt um für eine Woche im Studio zu verschwinden und mit dem wieder auftauchten was bekannt wurde als die „ Speedwell Sessions“ – ihre erste eigentliche Punk/Speed Metal/Crossover-Veröffentlichung. Positive Besprechungen vergrößerten das Publikum der Band, da nun auch eine wachsende Zahl Metalheads die Auftritte besuchte. Nach einer weiteren kurzen Periode kreativen Schaffens kehrten sie ins Studio zurück, spielten „Path To Destruction“ ein und veröffentlichten es, ein frühes Beispiel rauhen British Thrash/Metal/Hardcores. Die EP verkaufte sich vollständig, vertrieb sogar MADONNA vom ersten Platz in den East of England Record Charts.
Obwohl ihr muskalischer Stil sich gewandelt hatte, legten sich ANIHILATED darauf fest, sich nicht der gewöhnlich genutzten satanischen Metal-Themen anzunehmen, sondern entschieden stattdessen, ihre Punk-Ideale und Überzeugungen wie Selbstbestimmung und soziale Gerechtigkeit zum Ausdruck zu bringen.
Dies grenzte sie von anderen Bands ab und zog Anhänger aus beiden Fraktionen an, Metal wie Punk. Ihre Popularität stieg weiterhin an, Vorstellungen in Fanzines und Magazinen sowie Bootleg-Aufnahmen rund um den Globus sicherten eine große, internationale Folgschaft und Kult-Band-Status. All dies, zusammen mit einer Anzahl profilierter Auftritte, bescherten ANIHILATED Anerkennung und Bestätigung als einer der Vorläufer und Wegbereiter des Thrash Metal im Vereinigten Königreich.
Ihr erstes volles Thrash-Album „ Created In Hate“ wurde im Metal Forces Magazine als die „bedeutenste UK Thrash Metal Veröffentlichung bisher“ beschrieben. Die Band war das folgende Jahr unterwegs bevor sie wieder ins Studio gingen, um „The Ultimate Desecration“ aufzunehmen. Dieses wurde weithin als ihr bestes Studio-Album angesehen und wurde von Marquee Records als „one of the finest UK Thrash Metal releases ever“ erachtet.
In der wirtschaftliche Rezession in England in den frühen Neunzigern schluckten große Major-Plattenfirmen einige der besten Independent-Plattenfirmen während andere unter ihnen verwelkten und starben. ANIHILATED wurden ein Opfer des Gemetzels und lösten sich auf.
Doch ihre internationale Fan-Basis blieb stark über all die Jahre. Tief im Untergrund erhielt sich die loyale Anhängerschaft. Vinyl-Exemplare von „Path to Destruction“, „Created in Hate“ und „The Ultimate Desecration“ wurden über den Globus gehandelt und zementierten den Namen ANIHILATED in die Herzen der Underground Thrash Metal Fans. Das digitale Zeitalter brach an und mit ihm die Wunder des Internets. ANIHILATED-Foren, Fan-Seiten und Wunschlisten tauchten auf, ANIHILATED wurde als Einfluss benannt und als „am-meisten-auf-CD-gewünscht“ genannt.
Die japanischen Plattenfirmen „In Crust We Thrash“ und „Aktiva//Protesta Rekordo“ brachten „Path to destruction’“ unter großem Kritikerlob auf CD neu heraus, alle Pressungen verkauften sich vollständig. Zwei Jahre später veröffentlichte das chinesische Label „Area Death Productions“ noch einmal für den asiatischen Markt als Box Set mit T-Shirts und verschiedenen Beilagen. Das brasilianische Label „Marquee Records“ veröffentlichte die beiden Longplayer als remasterte Wiederveröffentlichungenr. Als Folge all des positiven Feedbacks und des unermüdlichen und unnachgiebigem Drucks seitens der Fans, der alten wie der neuen, sind ANIHILATED wieder zurück!
Es war sehr wichtig für ANIHILATED, ihre „Old School“-Identität beizubehalten. „ Scorched Earth Policy“ ist der wahre, alte ANIHILATED-Sound, hat aber ein etwas brutaleres Grundgefühl als alle bisherigen Veröffentlichungen. Die Band hat nicht den Wunsch, gegen irgendjemanden anzutreten, sondern stattdessen nach ihren Stärken zu spielen und ihren Sound mehr auf eine straffere und explosiblere Form auszurichten.
Formed in 1981, Anihilated are one of Britain’s first thrash metal bands. They played a vital part in the creation of the crossover genre and influenced the development of the British thrash metal scene.
Anihilated evolved from their early Punk roots around the same time that Metallica and Slayer were breaking the brand new thrash scene in America.
After inclusions on various successful compilation albums, They instinctively turned towards a much faster and metallic sound. Early gigs with their new material bemused their mainly punk audiences, as back then, most people had never seen or heard a thrash band before, and it was first thought that they were selling out. However, the realisation that Anihilated had not abandoned their ethics or social conscience, maintained their credibility within the punk community and they retained its full support while they continued to develop their heavier, thrash style.
In spring 1984 they finally raised the funds to disappear into the studio for a week and emerged with what became known as the ‘Speedwell Sessions’ which was their first actual release of Punk/Speed Metal/crossover. Positive reviews expanded the bands audience which saw a growing number of Metalheads attending their gigs. After another short period of creative writing, they returned to the studio to record and release their renowned ‘Path To Destruction’ EP, an early example of raw, British, thrash/metal/hardcore. The EP completely sold out, even knocking Madonna off the number one spot in the East of England record charts.
Although their musical style had changed, Anihilated chose not to adopt the usual Satanic themes of metal, but decided instead, to express their punk ideals and beliefs of self empowerment and social justice. This set them apart from other bands, and drew followers from both the punk and metal scenes. Their popularity continued to grow, featuring in fanzines/magazines and bootleg recordings around the world, which secured a large international following and cult band status. This, together with a number of high profile gigs, saw Anihilated achieve recognition and acknowledgement as one of the forerunners and innovators of Thrash Metal in the UK.
Their first full thrash album ‘Created In Hate’, was described in Metal Forces Magazine as “the most important UK Thrash Metal release to date’. The band spent the next year out on the road before returning to the studio to record ‘The Ultimate Desecration”. This was widely regarded as their best studio album and has been deemed by Marquee Records, to be “one of the finest UK Thrash Metal releases ever”.
The British economic recession of the early 1990′s saw major record companies swallowing up some of the best British independent record labels whilst others withered and died. Anihilated became a casualty of the carnage and disbanded.
Anihilated’s international fanbase remained strong over the years. Deep within the underground, the loyal support for Anihilated continued. Vinyl copies of ‘Path to Destruction’, ‘Created in Hate’ and the ‘Ultimate Desecration’ albums were traded across the world, cementing the name of Anihilated into the hearts of underground thrash metal fans. The digital age arrived and with it the wonders of the internet. Anihilated forum pages, fan sites and wish lists appeared, siting Anihilated as influences, favourites, and most wanted on CD. Japanese labels ‘In Crust We Thrash’ and ‘Aktiva//Protesta Rekordo’ re-released ‘Path to destruction’ to great critical acclaim, with all pressings selling out. Two years later Chinese label ‘Area Death Productions’ released it again for the Asian market, selling it as a box set with t-shirts and various merchandise. Brazilian Label ‘Marquee Records’ released a run of remastered re-issues of the two full length albums. In the wake of all the positive feedback a Get your copy now!nd relentless pressure from fans, old and new to reform, Anihilated are back together again.
It was very important for Anihilated to retain their old school identity. ‘Scorched Earth Policy’ is true to the old Anihilated sound, but has a more stripped down and brutal feel to it than any of their previous releases. The band have no wish to compete with anyone, but are instead, playing to their strengths, refining and focusing their sound towards an all tighter and more explosive delivery.
